Here is my MLM Story, I got to know MLM in 1980 when I was a student at Washington State University, a phone installation technician came to my apartment to install my phone and he noticed on my book shelves, I had a lot of personal development books such as Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill and Psycho Cybernetics by Dr Maxwell Maltz. He made an appointment with me to share a business opportunity. The next day he showed up dressed very smartly just like a businessman, and he drew the circles and shared the concept of the McDonald’s franchise and how you can build a similar franchise, and that was Amway! I bought the business kit but never really got started in the business because I was busy with my studies.
When I was transferred to University of Washington in Seattle, I joined the Toastmasters Club and met Dr Edward Sutter; who introduced me to Forever Living. Dr Sutter also introduced me to my Sifu Taky Kimura; well, that is another very interesting story. When we meet up for coffee, I will share with you how I chose the name Bruce in 1981 to honour my Sifu Grandmaster Bruce Lee!
Again because of my commitment to my studies I was not active in Forever Living but I did attend a huge Amway rally where over 6,000 people gathered at an indoor stadium and I went up on stage and shook hand with the legendary Amway Leader, Bill Britt. I was on stage because I told them I was from Singapore, and at that time I was the only one that is from a place that is farthest from Seattle. I was given a warm welcome and encouragement to do the network marketing business. You can say I was definitely inspired by Amway and the powerful and positive energy that night!
When I returned to Singapore, I followed the crowd and did what most people do; got a job. I was in the travel industry for six years and the advertising industry for another six years, making a total of 12 years working as an employee. I enjoyed my job but I was overworked and underpaid and didn’t have much time for myself and my loved ones.
